A fire broke out at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Sunday evening, creating panic among patients and staff. The incident occurred in the cardiology department located on the second floor of the hospital's main building, next to the main gate.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke and flames emerging from the bathroom window of the cardiology department. Initial investigations suggest the fire originated from a pile of old clothes stored in the toilet, which somehow ignited.
The situation quickly escalated as the smoke spread through the floor, prompting immediate action from hospital staff. They took initial steps to contain the blaze before the fire brigade arrived. Two fire engines were dispatched to the spot, and firefighters managed to control the fire effectively before it could spread further.
Local councilor Biswaroop Dey, who rushed to the site upon receiving a call from Mayor Firhad Hakim, confirmed that no major damage occurred. He reassured that the situation was under control and there were no casualties. The fire department is investigating the cause of the blaze to prevent future incidents.
The timely intervention by the hospital staff and firefighters ensured that the fire did not pose a serious threat. However, the incident caused considerable excitement and anxiety in the hospital premises. Many patients and their families were seen rushing out of the building in fear.
